And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Could be... But I have another two possibility's: First: The male and his son the first and the female last who are the workers. Second Possibility: He is the defender, aka the weapons-bearer, and shouldn't be encumbered with anything else, and the child CAN'T schlep much else, therefore the Females have to bear the trade-goods or the household.
And even then it is hard to say if they are slaves, relatives or wife's... But the difference between wife and slave was and is hard to make, even today in so called advanced cultures / society's / nations (spit).
