And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I have lived in an age of shrinking glaciers worldwide. The glacier bathtub ring is obvious in this picture. It makes me wistful to see this, even in the mountains I climbed in my younger days. But the people who will live when the glaciers come again will be even more sad. Long snowy winters and short cool growing seasons. People who live in the mountains will retreat to the flatlands. There are old medieval and early modern illustrations of the menacing Alpine glaciers like dragons threatening to overwhelm the mountain towns. Hopefully I will live long enough to see the change.
