Brrrr! Global Warming is getting worse.

It has been 30 years since the last time Lake Erie was 100% frozen over in February 1996. This year, however, Cleveland’s Great Lake has come extremely close.

As of Feb. 3, 2026, Lake Erie is 94% frozen over, a figure that far exceeds the average ice peak of 65-70%, according to the National Weather Service Cleveland.

In the meantime, a 80 mile long crack formed in the lake ice.

  1. Lake Erie froze more than 94% in both 2014 and 2015.

  2. As someone living along the Lake Erie Shore, it is more a collection of Ice Chunks floating on the surface than frozen over.

  3. Someone said, "global warming... is there nothing it can't do?" It's why they started saying climate change instead of warming. Any kind of change can be included.

  4. Some people have trouble understanding averages. The fact that its been 30 years since it last happened should tell you something

  5. 96-97 was a REAL winter, that's the year that Grand Forks ND had the Red river flood, a blizzard and downtown on fire all at the same time.
The downtown fire was only the 2nd floor & above because the 1st floor was flooded.

    1. Was that when an air tanker was called in to drop fire retardant on the building?

And no one complained that FEMA wasn't taking care of their needs, but instead NoDaks took care of things.

  6. The lake's been frozen over before https://www.goerie.com/story/news/history/2025/02/22/people-who-walked-across-lake-erie/78092281007/

  7. It's been a much colder winter in the NE this year. After getting the NG bill I calculated the average daily usage and found it only slightly over the usage from last year. The two thousand I spent re-insulating the doors and windows and closing off the bathroom shower vent made a big difference.

  8. I've been waiting for news that the Ohio River has frozen over. Last time was winter 76-77 and 77-78. Alas, not likely to happen now as we've passed peak January cold for New England, IMHO. Now we have to brave February snow storms which are typically the worst month for snow, again in New England.

I see in the news that Tahoe is getting walloped with something like 5 feet over the coarse of a couple days. That's gotta be tough.

  9. Just think how much colder it would be were it not for global warming.
