On X

  1. Even ignoring the ridiculous cost of most "smart" appliances, the fact that they can be remotely hacked (manufacturer assurances to the contrary) is the #1 reason I'm never having one of these God damn things in my house. I've seen too many bad sci-fi and crime movies to know that usually doesn't turn out well.

  2. That pacemakers and other implantable devices can now be remotely accessed via the internet is BEYOND disturbing. Bad enough your can can be hacked to kill you....your pacemaker, etc.?? NOTHING SMART about a SMART device of ANY KIND.

  3. Yeeaaahhhh...not too worried about someone controlling my robovac. What in the heck do you think it can do? Oh no, please don't clean my floors! More to worry about such as how a supposed video doorbell without a subscription still records AND stores your video.

    1. "Yeeaaahhhh...not too worried about someone controlling my robovac." please re-read that part about controlling the vacum's camera....while you stand naked in front on the shower. Thanks for your attention to this matter!

    2. While I stand naked in front of a shower? After boot camp, showering with 70 or so people I'll never remember or see again, after years living in Japan, yeah, that's going to bother me. Not.

    3. I thought they only had lidar and such, never knew they were going to video. None of my 5 vacs have a video camera so it's not a problem.

Nobody's going to want to see video of me in the shower. :-)

    4. Nobody cares about you- but what about your loved ones? Think it through. Clearly you live solo.

  4. It is with great confusion that I read about this event.
First - Why does a vacuuming machine need a camera ?
Second - What do all the acronyms mean ? Seriously ?
DJI is the brand name, so maybe something like David Jones' Industries - don't worry about that one unless it is Dirty Jerkers Intimate.
Next API .... ok, some of you live with your wet bits on a circuit board, but plenty of us are still normal.
IoT ? How many sexually explicit words can you fit to IoT ?

Thirdly - And this is sort of left field (L/F)
Being oldish and having run a few businesses, made lots of money, built a few flash houses, lost each of them to whatever woman I had wrongly picked (or vice versa) and had my fortunes reversed by a literal broken heart, I am now quite careful about what I spend my money on ... ok, it is mainly my cats, but let's forget about them because they do sleep 16 hours a day ... so rather than tey and keep up with all the Jones's out there and spend $65k on a flash looking PHEV with a subscription for warming seats and the like, I settled on a 2012 Alfa Romeo 159 TI for $6000.
WHY ? You ask ? I will tell you. The motor is a Diesel with a reputation for doing up to 500,000kms, the gearbox is an Aisin, the most reliable brand alive, the car can zooms faster than I am comfortable with ... and it has no smart tech, no cameras, now direct link to the FBI, CIA, WHO, UN, or BAFTA (gotta luv those acronyms)
And, as a last note while my cappuccino gutters next to my ageing Apple computer, when I pull up next to some guys driving their near brand new KIAs and Chery's, their Dongfengs, and their Mazdas and Audis, all of them with finance costing them $250 a week, and all of them with their every fart and nose pick relayed in real time to a central control bank of video recorders .... they all look at my car with envy, because it is the most beautiful production car ever made ... and cost less than their sunroof option.

  5. Another back door into spying on you bros...... Cars, vacuums, TVs, phones, appliances.... it is on purpose. Cool thing about the vacuum is that it can be moved around the house or building to spy on you. A recon drone. Probably had some agency's help. in developing. May have sniffers too. Price you pay for convenience.

    1. If it ever runs about on its own, a .38 center mass should take care of it.

  6. I have to laugh at all of these whiz bang companies, including federal government contractors, like whoever supplies the long endurance drones the U.S. Army and Air Force use, that put software in their products with no security in the code to prevent the device from being hacked. That's like standing on the side of he road with a pile of gold next to you holding a sign that says "I bet you can't take my gold", then getting run over by the next car that comes along with the driver paying attention.
