  1. I have had dogs
Evey dog I have had would sleep the sleep of the dead when it was dark
Hard wired ... hunt during the day, mainly morning and evening
Snooze during the middle of the day, sleep when it is dark
Every movie, and the above thing at Macy's, purely hype
Those drooling dogs behind the chainlink fences at every floodlit car wrecker's yard ?
    Yeah, nah, they'd be asleep
Don't believe me, go out tonight and rattle some fences where it says GUARD DOGS
    You'll probably disturb a cat.

    1. I'd take 3rd shift with four, and 100% guarantee no break-outs.,
They might break in, but not out.

    2. Like the old joke where a burglar breaks into a vacant house. Parrot tells the burglar that "Jesus is coming." "Yeah," the burglar says. Parrot responds, "Jesus is a Rottweiler."

    3. You must've never owned one. ALL my Dobies have slept like they're dead, but you can't walk within 50' of the house and not be heard. And, with only a little coaching on my part, will confront, and stop anyone out there. Go ahead and break in, all bets are off, you'd better be armed, cause you're in big trouble. Goes for their vehicles, too. Yes, it's THEIR VEHICLE. Open the door and ask them. Hope you have good insurance.

    4. Evidently never been around a Great Pyrenees. Bark all night to warn you away. Mine will be asleep during the day and I swear to God, a hawk flies over and they just explode from their sleep, chasing, barking. They're impressive.

    1. Near on 70-years ago, a buddy of Brother needed a pricey part for his car. Way short of cash they proceeded afterhours to the local junkyard with tools and a pound or two of hamburger. Brother sweet-talked & fed the watchdog while his buddy successfully copped the part.

  3. depends on how well the dog is trained. real guard dogs are not something to fool around with. had a roadie ridgeback that was outstanding in that part.
he be dead to the world and hear something and be up in a flash.
for best results, get 2 or more of them. honest to God, if a damn squirrel made in on the porch, they be up and at the door. didn't bark much at all, but they did let you know. I sure Macy's did just get some dog from the pound and let them roam
    in their stores.

  4. I would imagine that these guard dogs were accompanied by human handlers. Even if it was only one human per five or six dogs.

  5. I looked it up:

    Doberman Pinschers

Macy's has a history of using Doberman Pinschers as guard dogs, particularly in the Herald Square flagship store. Established in 1952, these dogs patrolled the store at night, inspecting aisles and checking for signs of theft or fire. They were trained to perform specific commands, such as "Watch Him" and "Get Him," and became famous for their beauty and strength. The dogs lived in kennels on the 20th floor and were known for their distinctive names, including Red Star, Mom, and Cash. Their presence helped ensure the safety of the store, which covered 2 million square feet across 11 floors.

    2. That’s what I was thinking. At least take the dogs to a place during the day where they could soak up sun and run on grass. Gotta take proper care of your tools.

  7. Nowadays that would be considered "racist"....obviously ignoring the RACIST implication that only blacks would be harmed...as only blacks break into stores.

      Black guy walks down street.
Got any stats on which is more likely to get stopped by cops for simply walking down the street?

    3. Anon @7:22 - the answer to your question depends on the country, city and time of day.

  8. Reminds me of a movie called Trapped (1973).
A man is accidentally locked in a department store overnight and finds himself held at bay by six vicious Doberman guard dogs. Starring James Brolin, Susan Clark, Earl Holliman and Robert Hooks.
