  1. When we moved here 20 years ago I built a new workshop-office and needed someone to install 2 overhead doors. I heard the rumors about the murderous springs, so I tried to hire someone to install the 2 doors I had delivered. Everybody wanted an arm and a leg so I did them myself.

Easy. BIG jigsaw puzzle. I installed both and over the next few years I installed 11 more for other people, charging $100 to $300 each. I was in my early 50's at the time and found even 16' doors fairly easy. Springs? Please. Don't let rumors scare ya. 20 years later my doors have performed well with no problems.

    1. Forgot. The most important thing is the opening HAS to be square, plumb, and level. Or made so by the door installer. It's appalling what framers are doing these days.

  2. Personally, if a neighbor installed one of those (really stupid) garage doors on my block, I would seriously consider figuring out how to make it disappear.

  3. Lithium grease bimonthly on the moving parts and spring extend the life.
