Snowing Now On Shasta

Avalanche Gulch/Casaval Ridge yesterday in a rare moment of sunshine

Green Butte at 8800 feet, near treeline

Looking Straight Up

Rime ice creating a "Treesicle."  Man, that is insane.  Amazing trees can live through that kind of deep freeze.

  1. Seen them explode during a quick warmup after freezing like that.
    I do mean explode!
Loud “bang”, and the tops jump up before falling down.

  2. Seeing all of that snow on Mt Shasta makes me sad. Only because the mountains in Colorado currently have less than half their normal snowpack. That means that the Colorado ski industry will suffer greatly, the Colorado state economy will suffer and the snow melt in the spring will be paltry at best.

  3. Been a long time since I read this but the conifers have short needles to protect them from snow and ice.

  4. It's a beautiful day for fishing down here on The Gulf of America.

    1. Birdchaser: Let me know how the oppressive heat, ungodly humidity and nasty bug are down there in July. OK?
