And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Richard Wooden Leg. Cheyenne, photo ca 1927. Fought at the Battle of the Little Bighorn
The "battle" of Little Big Horn was for the most part an outright slaughter of a small troop of virtually leaderless US Army troops by thousands of blood thirsty American Indians.
Guess I would ask you, how would YOU react to a bunch of men coming to slaughter you and every man, woman and child? I know what I'd be doing. The campaign against the Indians was basically an act of genocide by today's standards. Takes little research to find this out.
Indians were conquered, but that doesn't mean hey were in the wrong for trying not to be.
It was good in the long run, but bloody as hell and morally confusing to sort it all out. Anyone who thinks they have it figured out is just plain wrong.
Looks like he was a crack shot kind of guy.
