And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

I read that as "Tofa raised this stone in memory of his mother Guda." But my Norse might not be as good as it should be.
This image is a drawing of the runestone from Hanning, Denmark (often cataloged as DR 48). It’s a Viking Age memorial inscription, and most of what survives is the standard formula: “[Name], Tófi’s son, raised this stone in memory of Gyða, his mother.” What’s left to translate beyond that is mainly the damaged/missing name(s) at the beginning and a fragment at the end that likely names the rune-carver (the “X carved/cut [the runes]” line). You want one? Put in your order! Red or brown hair? Freckles or porcelain skin? Able to cook? Lemme know, I'll be back next fall. Might even oppress the French, if the English have no gold.

Ha! I was nearly right on. Where's my longboat? Time to go raiding in England, where I hear there is gold and red headed maidens.
DeleteHow come you are always raiding for maidens, but never bring any maidens back?

DeleteI thought it said our only goal is the Western shore - then some odd chanting.
