And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
My guess is St. Mere Eglise - my Favorite. I did my last jumpmaster (~ 10 sticks from a chopper) there - 2 weeks from ETS - 1972. The ADC a real pain in the ass One Star showed up as we were wrapping up, for his pay jump. He went up alone and the pathfinders took it out on him (and me) - delayed the 3rd "execute" and we dropped him over the trees. We "DDed Most T T"! Like UH1H CE he did serious a riser pull and just missed a pine tree enema, but still had to double time across the whole DZ . My last 2 weeks were spent in hiding.
I did my only jump over Hanau Army Airfield back in '81. Snow was falling and had already covered the ground. Ceiling was below regulation, but my Jump Master gave me "the go" and out the door I went. Canopy opened as the wind picked up and threatened to take me to the trees. So relying on my training, I climbed the risers and steered myself back onto the airfield for a perfect PLF. That was one of the most fun events of my life. Thank you, David Beach!
Now do that with 80lbs in a backpack a rifle and 3 gallons of water, plus a ATGM and 200 rd belt of 7.62 for the machine gunner. At just regulation altitude. At night. In a snow storm.
been there
ReplyDeleteDid the chute open?
DeleteSeems like a perfectly good aircraft.
ReplyDeleteHe's the second jumper?
ReplyDeleteNo, he is either the 4 or 5th depending how many canopies are in that picture. There other side of the aircraft exited 1st.
DeleteKnees to the breeze...anyone recognize that DZ? Salerno, Holland, Sicily?

ReplyDeleteAt least your not a target dangling from strings at night in a snowstorm.
