  1. This picture must be from the early twenties. Before Billy Mitchell proved the vulnerability of capital ships to airplanes. There are no AA guns on deck. I wonder if any were fitted prior to Pearl Harbor?

    1. 1934 rebuild fitted eight 5-inch/25 AA with rudimentary directors, as well as a number of .50-cal MG's. Totally inadequate, of course.
As an aside, the Brooklyn Bridge height above mean high tide dictated how high the battleship spotting tops could be. There are some radio antenna topmasts that had to be lowered to get under the bridge.

    2. Might be shortly after initial commissioning in 1916. The lattice cage masts were replaced in her 1929 - 1931 modernization, but this photo shows her forward, below deck secondary guns. IIRC, the forward & aft 5" were removed during WW1 and not replaced because the gun positions were very wet.

    1. Nope. Looking from the Manhattan Bridge toward the Brooklyn Bridge with lower Manhattan in the background.
      Correct in every way.

  4. Re: Reversed Image - That looked like the Empire State Building in the upper right. Maybe that is a different building.

  5. Did she ever get to fire a round in anger/battle? Not counting Pearl, of course.
