  2. I was in Japan when Tanaka resigned after Lockheed bribed them into buying the F-104. I saw one during "Friendship Day" at Iwakuni. That's Armed Forces Day to us, but Japan was still extremely sensitive about the military back then. It was a beautiful airplane, especially next to our F-4 Phantoms.

  3. Italian F-104S licence built in Italy. The Italians improved the Starfighter and made it a multi-role fighter bomber.

  4. A bit of scouring the internet and I found a drag race between a Ferrari F1 car and a Starfighter.
"Eight years later, in 1989, the Italian Air Force gifted Ferrari one of its decommissioned F-104s, painted bright red, with the Ferrari crest on its jet nacelle. This jet now sits at Fiorano, carrying the number 4-27: ‘4’ for the number of the squadron that adopted Baracca’s signature symbol back in the First World War, and ’27’ for the racing number of Gilles Villeneuve."

  6. I had had the honor to know a Starfighter pilot. He was a little guy but a total badass. I had total respect for him. He said that the only way the Starfighter worked as an airplane was to fly the fuck out of it. You took off screamin', you flew it screamin' and you landed it screamin' or it fell out of the sky.
