My Uncle beat Big Daddy with a redneck built dragster. 502 Cadillac motor with a dog clutch. Once it engaged you were all in no transmission. High octane he mixed with nitro glycerin. He didn't allow anyone in the shop while mixing. Good old days
The one I had and drove, didn't have a Hemi, just a small block Mopar and it was fun to drive but it had to be pointed straight since at launch there wasn't much weight on the front end and steering wasn't an option. Tried putting weight on the front and it made it a real handful at the top end. Blew a motor in the lights once and couldn't tell where I was on the track just held the wheel steady until all the oil and water quit hitting my mask and goggles. Lifted one side of the goggles and sure enough, right down the middle of my lane.
I used to love watching the drag races. Way back when they used to be broadcast every week, all summer. Going to them in person at the local track was a blast, as long as you remembered to take ear muffs.
Those front engine designs went away after Garlits moved the driver to the front. Too many injuries with the drive line under the driver/between his legs.
