  1. Just to the north is a far worse threat...the caldera of Campi Flegrei...bigger than Yellowstone. But nice satellite shot.

  4. I was just there yesterday. But far more impressive is Aetna, nearby in Sicily - the whole damn place is craters from one time or another, and all of it pretty recent. I was walking around one of them, near the peak, 3 days ago. Worth the trip.

  6. Pompeii is at about 8 o'clock from the caldera in that pic, just inland of the upper jetty in the lower bay.
    And when Vesuvius blows again, the modern residents will be just as surprised as the ancient ones were.

    1. Most of the ancient ones had already left town; there was plenty of warning in the days leading up to it, and similar events in recent memory, then. The only ones left were the usual knuckleheads and the looters - and a few of the slaves that didn't have any choice.
