  2. "Inlet spiral manufactured by Voith for a Kaplan turbine at the Ardnacrusha power station in Ireland , 1928."

"A spiral turbine , also known as a closed turbine , is a water turbine with an inlet spiral. The opposite is the shaft turbine , also known as an open turbine or chamber turbine , in which the water is not guided in any particular way before entering the guide vane ring. Spiral turbines are now the usual design for Francis and Kaplan turbines . They are more efficient than shaft turbines. Shaft turbines are now mostly found only in historic power plants and small hydroelectric power plants with low heads."
