And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I was just there yesterday. But far more impressive is Aetna, nearby in Sicily - the whole damn place is craters from one time or another, and all of it pretty recent. I was walking around one of them, near the peak, 3 days ago. Worth the trip.
Pompeii is at about 8 o'clock from the caldera in that pic, just inland of the upper jetty in the lower bay. And when Vesuvius blows again, the modern residents will be just as surprised as the ancient ones were.
Most of the ancient ones had already left town; there was plenty of warning in the days leading up to it, and similar events in recent memory, then. The only ones left were the usual knuckleheads and the looters - and a few of the slaves that didn't have any choice.
Just to the north is a far worse threat...the caldera of Campi Flegrei...bigger than Yellowstone. But nice satellite shot.

DeleteIf mankind learned by its mistakes, the Bay Of Naples would be a national park
