And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

At my age, close quarters battle is to be avoided.
I'm not an "expert", but I've spent a bit of time finding the limitations of rifles, chamberings for such, and my own failings at distances past 600 yards to have a bit more than an armchair understanding of exterior ballistics. Do you have specific questions?
Practice until you know yourself and your chosen weapon.
Terrain is part of the process. In my hilly, heavily wooded area you'd struggle to find a clear shot past 200 yards. Most deer taken here past 100 yards is from an elevated deer stand shooting into prepared shooting lanes.
SEEING your target is the main problem. Snipers use information from others to set up their hide where the target to be murdered is going to be.
In the woods unless your target is wearing flame orange just how far can you see them and even better ID them as friend or foe?
Kind of a bad idea to shoot your friends who are also out there.
Understand that "Buck Fever" isn't just a country story. It's a world of difference between shooting a deer, shooting a person in anger, and stalking and murdering a person in cold blood.
But then again, I'm not a sniper, I'm a combat medic with a few decades of being there when the shooting happens. I work EMS so I know a bit talking to police snipers.
I harvest my deer whenever I need more meat in the freezer. It's not hunting to me, harvesting.
I'm not an internet expert, I admit when I don't know something.
But I suspect in the coming social unpleasantness coming that few enemies are going to walk up with obvious "I'm your enemy" uniforms or flags. That foolish behavior will end after the first few get blasted.
