And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I'm 60 years old and I remember taking that toy to preschool when I was four for show and tell. What I remember best is I lost his silver boots so he had bare feet - the teacher called me on it and I said well that's how my space man does his stuff.
I had this toy, I remember my Mom playing the record for me…moreover, the real capsule was designed to “float” - However, I seem to remember mine filling with water and sinking - fortunately Joe was able to egress as the tub wasn’t that deep! (Reminiscent of Liberty Bell 7?!) Great toy! Great memory! Thanks!
I wanted one of those so bad when I was a kid, but Mom said it was too expensive. Several years ago they re-issued the capsule. I saw it in a Toys-R-Us and checked it out. It looked pretty cheaply made, and was too expensive. Didin't buy it. sigh.
Ditto RC. Family couldn't afford it (or the helicopter with thumb-button rotor action which came out later). Always sucked when I saw them at friends houses.
Had it. With the record of Glenn's first flight. I can confirm it floated.
But in later years, the Great White Shark that came with Adventure Joe ate a lot of astronauts in their rubber rafts, and GI Joe pilots who ejected over water. Unless Scuba Diver Joe was nearby with his speargun.
Looked up the price of the capsule set as a collectible a few years back. Nearly cried.
I had that.
ReplyDeleteAlong with everything else that was GI JOE.

ReplyDeleteI didn't have that one but I did have a model Saturn V. Thanks for the memory!
ReplyDelete(The Guns of Navarone play set is a different topic, however.)
Had it and also had the deep sea diver suit.
ReplyDeleteI had that, and gave it to #2 Son when he was in a GI Joe phase. I had forgotten all about the record, but it was long gone.

Had deep sea diver suit as my dad was a avid diver
ReplyDeleteLets not forget, GI Joe with KUNG FU GRIP.
ReplyDeleteGI Joe was modeled after a real WW2 hero.

Anyone have any information to corroborate this?
Today's kids would open it, roll it around in their hands then ask, "What's it do?" "Where's the USB port?"
ReplyDeleteStill have mine, although the blond gijoe and most of the suit have gone missing....
