And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Man, we had an A&W Drive-In about a mile from where we were raused *1970's). We were of very modest means, and probably had a meal there about 3 - 4 times a year. But deserts were more frequent, and those frosty root bear floats in thick glasses as shown. Wow, a great summer evening.
Yup I remember A&Ws and a half-dozen drive-in movies within 15 miles of my home where the speakers were attached to the driver's window and occasionally forgotten as the car pulled away.
I never had one deliver a napkin dispenser on the tray before. I always had to make sure the napkins didn't blow away when I removed what was sitting on top of the small stack of them.
A&W’s main competition in Miami was Royal Castle. Served in frosted mugs, their birch beer was their answer to root beer. There’s still one Royal Castle located at 2700 NW 79th Street. Loved their “maggot burgers”. Yeah buddy, dining at the RC Steakhouse was a treat for us growing up.
For many years, there was an A&W in Goldendale, which made for a nice stop if one was driving from Portland/Vancouver to the Yakima Valley. And, since Highway 12 went through Goldendale, it was convenient.
Then WDOT built a bypass around Goldendale, and the next time I stopped at the A&W it was closed.

ReplyDeleteRoot Beer, nickel for small, dime for large, and quarter for quart.
ReplyDelete60's, those were the days.
There is one that still does curb service with window trays about 20 miles from me.
ReplyDeleteThat answers my question!

ReplyDeleteIf that tray doesn't have a foot long chili dawg hanging off both sides it's wrong.
ReplyDeleteA&W was the reward, during the summer, for winning a baseball game. Incentive, much. Baby burger, Momma burger and Papa burger, mmmm, mmmm.

ReplyDeleteIf they tried that with today's flimsy-ass cars there would be wind noises, inop. windows, & door dents after leaving.
ReplyDeleteOur local A&W just closed up for good. I'll miss it. Loved root beer floats
ReplyDeleteSeveral old-school A&Ws in the area, and a handful of the gas station co-branded/co-located ones. All do a fine honest meal. Good stuff!
