Push away from the dinner table, buddy.

  1. Jack Conroy flew an F-86 from Van Nuys to New York in Operation Boomerang. There is a book about it. I have it around here somewhere. VNY was a ANG base.
Anyway, it was Conroy who came up with the idea using a Boeing Stratocruiser to make a Guppy.

  2. Saw one up close on the flight line at Dyess AFB in 1970. Thought it was called a pregnant guppy, though.

  3. From Wiki: The Aero Spacelines Super Guppy is a large, wide-bodied cargo aircraft that is used for hauling outsize cargo components. It was the successor to the Pregnant Guppy, the first of the Guppy aircraft produced by Aero Spacelines. Five were built in two variants, both of which were colloquially referred to as the "Super Guppy".

  4. Got to see one of those carrying something Apolloish in the late 60's. Can't remember what it was, but we got to watch the whole loading and take off.

Always have loved seeing them. Reminds me of when American Aerospace was #1.

  5. observed one landing at OSH for the convention some time ago. Cross wind landing limiting wind speed was not very much. it is so large, in the air it looks as if it is barely making any speed at all. on the ground, it is simply stupefyingly huge like a blimp with wings.
