If I were in charge...

I'd find the money to restore four just like that, train a crew of pilots and ground crew, and just fly the beautiful things around the country just like that, all year.

  3. For those who actually lived in the Bay Area back then. When the BRAC shut everything down there because Feinstein and HASC Chairman who hated the military to death the Coast Guard was left with Hamilton AFB for their housing before a certain person made the former housing at Alameda NAS available for them. Talk about a commute. Hamilton to Coast Guard Island as a commute sucked.
OTOH, they all got used to much worse.

    1. When I was at CGAS San Francisco (late 70's) we had the work hours set for the people who commuted up to Hamilton in Novato. They said if they got out 10 min late it added an hour to the commute.

    2. The USCG Strike Team still has a spot at Hamilton. They flooded the runways and the hangars are now high tech offices. So there's that.

  7. Beautiful plane but a dangerous one. The West German Luftwaffe lost more than 25% of their F-104s to crashes.
