And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
God's food. Unclear where this picture was taken, but it could easily be Central Texas, given the items being barbecued. There are multiple barbecue spots in Central Texas where the customer has to walk past the pit(s) to get to the dining room.
you are correct - it's from Washington, Texas - here's an article about the place: http://robbwalsh.com/2011/10/barbecue-time-machine/ The pic itself is from Texas Highways magazine, a publication I have subscribed to for about 40 years now - helps keep my Texan heritage current! (NOT Texas Monthly, which has a left leaning bent to it)
The Sons of Hermann in Washington-on-the-Brazos (the birthplace of Texas as a nation) is a chapter in history, for sure. I think the lodge has closed down now, unfortunately.
BUT you can still go over to H.A.Stoltz's place (R Place) on the weekends and get a decent meal - in the downtown metropolitan district, population around 200.

ReplyDeleteThe Wolf Lodge Inn near Coeur d'Alene, Idaho has the pit in the center of the restaurant. One of the best BBQ steaks I've ever had.
