Eerie Sound from Approaching Pyroclastic Flow at Semeru Volcano, Indonesia


On 19 November 2025, Indonesia’s Mount Semeru produced a large and dangerous pyroclastic flow, sending searing clouds of ash, gas, and rock many kilometers down its slopes. This video captures the scale of the event from a safe vantage point.

  3. Sounds like rain and thunder. But it's also happening during (causing?) a thunderstorm.

    1. The superheated ash and ejecta create static electricity in abundance, which then forms lightning, which translates to the thunder you hear. If you looks at any volcanic eruption where there's ash billowing, you'll see lightning.
