    1. According to g00gle search:

      "Search Assist:
The wire on a bokken is often used to reinforce the structure or to modify its weight and balance for training purposes. In some cases, it may also be part of a specific training technique or style that requires additional durability or functionality."
      You're welcome.

    2. Not bokken, shinai. It's made of flexible bamboo, not solid wood. I've never seen one with wire.

    3. Possibly for scoring, electronically? I also note that it attaches to the hand guard. I wonder if the whole apparatus is removable for traditional competition.

    4. It is not a wire, it is a piece of string. The string serves two purposes, both to hold the leather end cap on the shinai, and to provide a visual marker of orientation (shinpan (back of the shinai vs front/blade side). Hitting with the wrong side of the shinai does not earn any points...

    3. Not even close to twelve. Almost certainly in her early twenties, at least. I'll agree that some, even many Japanese women are good looking, but spend a few years there and illusions disappear. If you're looking for a subservient one, pity the fool. There's no such thing. Unfailingly polite in public, yes. Subservient? Not on this planet.

Going on fifty years experience, but find out for yourself. I regret nothing, but subservient?

  7. In Japan some tour companies let the person hire a sword or bow teacher like that for an hour of lesson. Since some of them are in beautiful locations it is not very cheap... But if you have the money it is certainly a great way to have a taste of the country.
