And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Why did Schlitz think this image would motivate people to drink their beer?
It was actually the most popular beer prior to prohibition but between some bad marketing decisions and changing the recipe afterwards they never recovered.
Back in Vietnam we only got Hamms, Carling Black Label, Olympia and Schlitz. They were all horrible but when you are hankering for a beer and that's all there is, it's drinkable. The Schlitz came in rusty steel cans. If I remember correctly, they all needed "church keys" to open them.
Found a 14-15 min. video on YouTube that detailed how Schlitz, the largest seller of beer in the early '70s, torpedoed its brand. Changing the brewing process & horrible advertising were its death knell.
I'd drink the Schlitz before Budweiser. Back when I drank regularly I went through a lot of Stroz. I guess it's still available, but I haven't seen any for years. It was good.
It's still around. Got a case of it in the kitchen. That was what we drank after bailing hay all day long. Started drinking it again after I retired and came home.
Fond memories of Schlitz. My Grandfather would sneak me shot glasses of it when my mother and Grandmother weren't looking. I was 5 or 6. They were NOT happy with him, but he AND I enjoyed it! :)
The bootleggers in the small dry county I grew up in(there were 27) only brought in the cheap crap like schiltz, but we tried to get there early so we didn't have to end up with the Falstaf...the most god awful beer ever brewed! Bubbarust
The worse beer I ever had was Iron Mike by Iron City, we said back in the day that the beer that you drank the night before is the sound that you make in the morning. Schlitz, Stroh's, Blats.... anyhow I am just enjoying my Miller Lite right now.
It doesn’t make me not want to drink Schlitz… 🤷🏻♂️

ReplyDeleteI drank Carling for a long time. 16 oz. bar bottles in the returnable cardboard case. It got the job done and fit my budget at the time.

DeleteLucky Beer was cheap and had riddles under the cap in the late 60s early 70s when I decided working wasn't my thing, man. That didn't last very long.
