And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
The police in the small town where I grew up were alerted to a car fleeing down the highway after committing a crime. An officer was assigned to pick up the pursuit and follow until the next jurisdiction took over. He decided to shoot out the tires on the fleeing car. He fired three rounds with no effect. The next jurisdiction picked up the chase and he returned to the police station. When he exited the patrol car, he saw three bullet holes in his own fender narrowly missing his own tire.
