And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
My grandpa's mom was full blood Algonquin, they lived way up in Maine near Machias, pretty basic life, pop worked from 14 till 19 as a game getter for kitchens who fed the loggers and electrification crews. Became a Merchant Marine, he was such a good shot from all the game shooting, they got him special, an M1 Garand, sat up on the bow or gang walks taking out Greman sea mines by shooting off the detonator prongs, paid him a $29 bonus for every mine he exploded. Even got a bronze plaque for the 119 mines he set off, said more than not the mines sunk instead of exploded, guess blowing off the prong left a hole and the mines eventually sunk, they think lot of mines where duds or decoys. The MM gave him a beautiful bronze grave stone set in pink granite when he died. He and his brothers and sisters were wild drunks but great to be around, i was pretty little so never met my great grand mom, but from photos they all were happy drunks.
It has been a while since I worked with the Nevada Walker River and Washoe Tribes. Actually delivered my daughter on the Walker River Reservation in 1979. My father was a partner with Bob Voit (Voit Rubber Co.) who came through and visited me and donated for a furtherance of some programs. Not sure if I helped in the long run but know I learned much about the difficulties of transitioning to a different culture.
