Cessna AT-17 Bobcat. In 1941 the RCAF obtained over 800 Bobcats or 'Crane 1' as they were called in Canada.

  1. The civilian version was the Cessna T 50. Also the first aircraft used by "Sky King."

    1. IMDb- There were two "Songbirds" used in the series--the first was a Cessna T-50 Bobcat, the second was a Cessna 310B.

  2. Maybe Al or Surly can help to identify the following.
An American built high wing with single flat engine. Two seats in tandem. The rear seat rotated to face the rear to face a table which swung down from a stowed position. This was used to train navigators.

I want to say late 1930s - early 1940s but am not certain.

  4. Canadian Warplane Heritage has one. The one in the pic has winter fronts fitted to restrict the amount of air cooling the engine.
The USA was pulled out of the great depression in 1939 by France, and Britain spending bazillions for airplanes, ammunition and ship repairs in east coast shipyards.

    1. Word. My dad and his friends struggled to find work until the foreign orders for warplanes came into the USA. He went to work for Vega Aircraft and later Lockheed. He left in 1942 to become a LA City firefighter and wound up being drafted into the Army Air Corps.

  5. Sky King flew a Bobcat, at least in the early part of the show. By the way, episodes of Sky King are up on YouTube.
