And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
If you have read this and have further interest I would urge you to read the entire journals as compiled by Moulton, it also can be “daunting “ but it is an amazing story, I have read them twice now.
I enjoyed that book immensely and have frequently enjoyed memories of some of the scenes in it. 20 years ago this summer, my wife and our 12 year-old daughter at the time took a vacation out west from North Carolina. When we came out of the north side of Yellowstone Park We drove up through Bozeman Montana. From there, we were headed west and then south to go through Lemhi pass. Looking at the map, no GPS for me in 2005, the speed limit on Montana Route 41 was just as fast as the speed limit on I 90 and I 15, so I said let’s take this shortcut. We were blessed with a serendipitous viewing of Beaverhead rock, which I learned from this book was a landmark that Sacajawea had recognized. A short while later, when we arrived in Dillon Montana, we discovered from the gas station attendant that the National Park Service’s traveling exhibition that they called the Corps of Discovery II, Which was all about the Lewis and Clark expedition. For over 18 months that traveling exhibition followed the route that Lewis and Clark took precisely 200 years earlier and would stop for a couple of weeks at places along the way to set up shop. One of the best vacations I’ve ever had.
