10mm auto in a revolver

  1. Real strong round. I had one. Strong as a 357.

  2. Could also fire 40 S&W cartridges.

  3. Without half-moon clips it's not going to be easy to eject the spent cases. Why have a 10mm when there are lots of 44 magnum revolvers on the market?

    1. Funny you mention it, was checking out all the magnum loads over at Ballistics By The Inch, from the muzzle/distance energy graphs they created, seems the .41 Mag is the most potent. Thats said from s died in the wool .44 guy who has hunted with an original Ruger 44 Carbine since 76. Its intriguing really. The notion a little bit skinnier magnum round has an edge, because it bring a tad smaller, opens up some possibilities in a design for an automatic carbine for the .41. The .44 presents some problems due to its girth, if one is to design an automatic rifle thats slim trim and handles quickly. The .41 could have a renaissance.

    2. I was wondering about the moon clips also. I guess the expert didn't weigh in as yet.

    3. Desert Eagle made a fine working .41RemMag semi-auto, fun to play with, too. David

    4. Because redundant cartridges sell more guns.

    5. Steve- I wouldn't call it redundant. I'd call it a .41 Magnum cartridge designed for semi-auto pistols.
Besides, it's creator didn't do redundant: Jeff Cooper.

    6. Bout 20 years ago I shot a wild boar in the noodle with a Ruger Blackhawk chambered in .41MAG. LIGHTS OUT!

  4. I have two revolvers that shoot semi-auto rounds. One, a Blackhawk has a second cylinder for .45 ACP and headspaces on the case mouth. No need, or possibility, of a moon clip. The second, a Redhawk head spaces on moon clips for the .45 ACP rounds. The cylinder also holds .45 colt which headspace on the rim.

  5. S&W does a N-Frame in 10mm, but it uses half-moon clips.

In this picture the rounds look pretty small again the chambers, suggesting it is just a staged picture rather than a working setup.

  6. Don't fire any of your home hot loads in old brass, is my advice.

  7. Per ballistics by the inch in a 4 inch barrel (no revolver data for 10mm auto so no cylinder losses) the 357 mag beats the 10mm in velocity and power.

Maybe I'm not reading the charts correctly?

And I know there are 7 and 8 shot 357 revolvers available.

I'm a bit old school, 38P+, 357 and 44 Special seem reasonably easy to shoot well and have done the job well enough.

    1. When using data from Ballistics by the Inch, remember the revolver conversion. For everything but revolvers, the chamber is part of the barrel length. For a revolver, barrel length is just the barrel. Those guys used (if I remember) a Thompson/Center single shot pistol with changeable barrels, so barrel length included chamber.

  8. Having a 2.5in and 6in .41RemMag revolver, I'll pass on a 10mm revolver; though the 10mm in a semi-auto pistol is nice, too - though not the same as the DE .41RemMag. David

    1. Great input. I've heard quite a bit of comparison of 10mm and .41MAG. Thanks man. - SNakepit

  9. Im pretty sure those would push right on through which is probably why the photo shows them not fully chambered.

  10. Not likely a good idea to fire that. If it would fire, recoil would jam remaining cartridges in, possibly out of reach of the firing pin. And if it did function on all six, it would take a wooden dowel to extract the empties one at a time. Moon clips or no dice, baby! Eod1sg Ret

  11. For any naysayers, look down the cylinder of a revolver, there is no distinct step for a case mouth to headspace on. Then look down the barrel of your auto loader. Distinct step. Also, I can load .41 mag to 1600 FPS with a 210 grain bullet out of an 8 and 3/8 inch Model 57 S & W. Can't do that with a 10mm. Eod1sg Ret
