And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

The icebreaker Tarmo arriving in Helsinki, Finland, 1907
Bow is designed to slide up onto the ice sheet and the weight of the ship cracks the ice. The first icebreaker ship was designed by the Russian Admiral defeated by Japan in 1905.
Look for Pics and Vids of those monster Nuclear-Powered Icebreakers used by the Russians. Some are half the size of an Aircraft Carrier, with twice the Shaft Horsepower, and Mash Through 30 Feet of Ice at 10 Knots. And you'll see People and Cars on the Ice like that, too. Not like the pussified 'West'.
Being an icebreaker has got to be hard on the screws.
ReplyDeleteNah, they use the bow of the ship to break through.

Back when you were allowed to get close to the action.
ReplyDeleteToday there would be so many regulations in place that NO ONE would be seen walking or bicycling on the ice.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Ohio next to a town populated by Finns. Nothing in that video surprises me.
