And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Years ago, I was traveling a LOT on British Air Business class(nice way to go when the company's paying for it). At one point, they gave me a free ticket to go anywhere they went. I was traveling so much I couldn't use it, so I gave it to my friend, who went to Munich for Ocktoberfest. Told him all I wanted out of it was a proper bier stein, which he obliged.
I was there in 1976, 77 and 78. was stationed in West Berlin at that time 76 was when the 101st went to Reforger and they had buses running back and forth to it. it was a blast ! 2.4 marks to the dollar back then. even have a 5 mark coin that was made into a neck charm or whatever you would call it. still have it too.
Prost! In Seattle is a group of German pubs, the Prost group. There are 3 in Seattle (there were 4 but one closed just after the government shut things down a few years ago...), 1 in Boise, and I think 1 in Portland. My Seattle faves are Prost! in an area just north of the zoo on Phinney Ridge, and my #1, Die Bier Stube, just north of the University District. German beers, not American-made German style, served in the correct authentic glassware. They celebrate all sorts of German events, hold parties and fun stuff all year. When Germany played Aregentina for the World Cup a few years ago, the place was jammed full and shenanigans ensued when Germany won. Get a punch card and pretty quickly you get merch from a hat or hoodie to a stein (I have 2!). If you get to Seattle, you gotta check them out.
The bat flu killed Gasthof zur Gemutlichkeit in Minneapolis, too. Great place, good food, circulating accordion player, polka band and dance hall in the basement on the weekends that was known to get rowdy, damn shame.
Despite a lot of extended travel in Europe many years ago I never made it past the Frankfurt bordellos, however my daughter got to München for the Festzeltea few years ago. She had a great time.
Splendid!!
ReplyDeleteA visit is still on my bucket list unfortunately
