And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
could we please stop glorifying these men. they were flawed. for personal reasons they led us into a very destructive war. they didnt tell the truth. they were just like politicians nowdays.
You beat me to it. Without getting caught by the tar baby feud, the elected President of the day had much more in common with Clinton/Bush/obama than Solomon. Dishonorable.
What Dan and A-nony said. Not to overlook great stupidity and arrogance on the Southern side, but if that Lincoln would have had a pair, he'd have got on the train to Richmond and talked things out. But he didn't, did he.
I'll agree there was stupidity on the Southern side, but the arrogance was clearly on the side of the Union. The north was taking the cotton money from the south and expected to keep doing so. It was later in the war that they claimed it was about slavery. I sure wish we'd picked our own cotton!
Not everyone living in the South owned slaves, jackass, and the market managers were taxing the Southern cotton growers both on shipping to manufacturers in the North and receiving finished goods going South, it was a necessity to find other markets and they did in Europe, which only pissed off the money grubbers as they thought the rubes in the South were all slaves to their greed.
And then, due to the lack of regular shipments of cotton to England and Europe, they planted it in Egypt and other Middle East areas. The US sales took a permanent hit as a result, so the South, and the North, both paid a price for the war.
It was the South that fired at Ft. Sumter Union soldiers that got things rolling. History is being rewritten. This country is being run into the ground deliberately. Two years ago we was in great shape.. Not needing foreign fuel. Low gas prices. Safe borders. No wars or even missle test. To mention a few. Just saying.
