And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

I read this some years ago and agree 100%.
ReplyDeleteYou will not be disappointed with this read.
From the reviews, lol:
ReplyDeleteI don’t know which print company printed this book, the font is almost illegible. Having read the book, I am left requiring telescopic milk bottle glasses for the remainder of my life. Simple tasks, such as not walking into walls is now a frequent hazard, driving a car, looking at the sky are now forgotten memories.
Just ordered a hardback copy from the bay. Any thing about The Great Game is always good.
ReplyDeleteCan not endorse Hopkirk strongly enough. From his delightful "In Search Of Kim" to any of his histories.
ReplyDeleteSET THE EAST ABLAZE will give you an idea what's ahead of us should the "Democrat-Socialist" consolidate their power.
Also add Byron Farwell to your summer reading list.
You talked me into it. I've reserved Setting the East Ablaze at the local library, but the single copy is currently being read by someone. Or being kept but not read, as the case may be.
DeleteDitto.
ReplyDeleteAll of Hopkirks books are fantasticly goof
I recently finished "Blood & Thunder" by Santa Fe writer Hampton Sides. This is the story of American Empire as demanded by President James Polk and starring Kit Carson. Polk said let's take America clear to the Pacific coast and it was one freaking mess. How the Taos natives scalped New Mexico governor Charles Bent and all his pals was a riveting episode. This is the best book ever if you want to know who Kit Carson was.
ReplyDeletegrinds slightly getting towards the finish line due to the back&forth of policy&boundaries, and the actual years elapsed overall.
ReplyDeleteregardless, worth your time.
afterwards, supplement with “Kim”.
