For the first time in 18 years, the moon is closer to the Earth than at any time during that period. It is called the perigee moon, and it is in fact 14% bigger. It is even 30% brighter. Even better, and for reasons poorly understood by scientists, the moon looks much bigger anytime you see it close to the horizon and through objects like trees.

Therefore, now that the moon is super sized due to it's close pass to the Earth (14%!!), you can double super size it by checking out the view as soon as it begins to rise and before it clears the trees.

Winner!
Large schools of tightly packed fish have suddenly and inexplicably appeared off of Acapulco Mexico in recent days.

Some say it must have something to do with the earthquake in Japan, but no one really knows.

This is an interesting illusion called the perception jiggle. Does the square in the center seem to be moving? It isn't, but the perception of movement is caused by the brain's attempt to interpret what it is seeing. Most of the time the brain's interpretation of sensations sent to it by the eyes is perfectly accurate, but occasionally a crack or flaw in it's visual algorithm can be detected, as here.

In Australia, a farmer discovered these fossil footprints of the extinct animal Diprotodon, a rhinoceros sized wombat type of creature. It is believed this animal might well be the source of the aboriginal people's belief in a dangerous and monstrous creature that lives in swampy areas that they call the Bunyip, through a kind of ancestral memory of a being now long extinct.

Kids + snow = happiness

On the way to Carson Pass, 36 balmy degrees.

Given what is going on in the world these days, I'm only too happy to be able to do this kind of stuff.

Everything about Hillary's prediction about Obama's ability to handle the phone call at 3 am has proved to be right.
Armed and Dangerous gives up blogging about politics because of his belief that it is basically over. The system he has been arguing about is about to fail, and there isn't any point to it any more.
On the lighter side, today is international π day (3.14)! Let's celebrate by taking the day off!

Just lovely... what could possibly be next today?
