PACIFIC OCEAN (Sept. 19, 2012) The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Cowpens (CG 63) fires its Phalanx close-in weapons system (CIWS) during a weapons test while underway.

Nice way to light up the night time!

The naturally lazy Obama finds debate prep to be " a drag."

Maybe he'll find some time for golf, just to blow off some steam.

Related: Ace wonders why Obama doesn't take more of an interest in golf.

Here's a "what the..." story of the day:

Oregon farmer eaten by his own hogs.

And some related anecdotes from the forum where I found this sad tale:

Reminds me of Mr. Daniels. When I was a kid, a long long time ago to be sure, penned hogs killed him.
There was no forensics and stuff like that back then but the way he was found everybody kind of figured what happened.

He had one leg in the pen jammed between the gate post and the gate. Hogs had eaten all the meat off his leg up to the knee and he had blead to death.

Figured he was either trying to step over the gate and fell or had a heart attack or something. All the hogs could get at was his leg and they flat ate that.

Something similar happened to a local farmer back when i was a kid. apparently he had gone into the pasture to check on his hogs and suffered a stroke or heart attack. They ate him completely up. it was the talk of the community for a while. then everyone forgot about it. hogs are meat-eaters for sure.

...

My older cousin raised what were then known as Spotted Poland Chinas. He had a boar that he was raising to try and win the heaviest hog sold at the Sioux City stockyards in June prize. Tiny had weighed over 1,000 pounds, but had lost down to about 940 due to being hauled to the Spencer and Minnesota State fairs (among other smaller ones as well). One morning when Ron went out to feed the other hogs, Tiny came roaring around the corner of the hog house where he didn't belong with a)a roar, b)his mouth snapping and c)the obvious intent to do Ron a great deal of harm. After he made it safely over the fence and rounded up a posse to get Tiny safely ensconced (they thought) in a sturdy enclosure, everyone was treated to a display of how Tiny got out in the first place. He would grasp the woven-wire fence in his teeth and start walking backward until the staples popped. This time, he was incarcerated in a building until the next morning, when the hell with the June prize, he was loaded up and hauled off to the (p)big house.

Great stories!

I have some chickens where I live, and I think they would do the same to me if there wasn't such a great disparity in size.  They have that predatory look in their eye, most definitely!
Alright, today I'm adding two blogs to my blog list.  Both of them seems to lure me in everyday with interesting and/or entertaining things, and when that goes on long enough, it means they need to go on the list.

Welcome to Free North Carolina and Bayou Renaissance Man.

Freckles, they are good.

The Indonesian Navy ordered four high speed trimaran missile boats, very similar in appearance to our littoral combat ships, but smaller.  Here is a video of the launching of one of them, the Klewang.

It appears to be a beautiful boat with excellent lines, but notice how oddly it appears to be plopped down on the beach, and launched directly off the beach itself.   Also, it is surrounded by what appear to be local villagers, who mill about only partly supervised right next to the boat.  On top of the ship there are two guys who are apparently there in some official capacity, but are unprofessionally dressed in shorts and casual shirts.  They look like they just came from a college dorm.

The launch itself seems poorly planned, with a line attached to a tug offshore, and what appears to be a large backhoe on the beach behind the boat to push it into the water.  All sorts of what appear to be villagers are all over the scene and even on the boat, helping is some fashion.  In the end, the Klewang gets in the water, but appears to have no power of its own, the motors either not yet functional or even uninstalled.

A very third world proceeding.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Klewang later caught fire at the shipyard while it's fittings were being completed, and it burned to the water line while a pathetic attempt with one fire hose from shore was made to put out the fire.  Here is video of the unfortunate end to a very pretty boat.

I guess you could have predicted something like this just by watching the video of the launch, which was characterized by disorganization, oddly make do planning, no real security, and complete unprofessionalism.  Try again, Indonesians, and this time perhaps learn from these mistakes.

All from the excellent Bayou Renaissance Man, whose consistently interesting posts have led me to add him to my blog list.
More intentional Democratic disenfranchisement.

Wisconsin absentee ballots for military voters have been sent too late, after the deadline.

You can't be required to show an ID at the polls, or you're racist, but the people dying and bleeding overseas must be prevented from voting because they might trend Republican.

The people that did this are scum.

"No state has suffered the last four years as much as has California — given that its progressive governor and legislative majorities serve as force multipliers for the Obama national agenda. We live in a 2X Obama state. And it is desirous for twelve or sixteen, not just four, more years in Washington.
The bluest state is polling at a 20 to 24 point lead for Barack Obama. Who cares that it is struggling with nearly 11% unemployment and facing a $16 billion budget shortfall? What does it matter that its public schools rated variously from 45th to 49th in the nation and that it is home to one-third of the nation’s welfare recipients, forty percent of the nation’s illegal aliens, and the largest prison population in the country? If Ohio supposedly has a million Obama-phones, I shudder to wonder how many are in California."

Very true. Read the whole thing.

Zebu cattle that big would have jumped clean over that fence and stomped that fool to jelly.

Crazy Einar picks the ten manliest guns of all time.

Fortunately, I personally have two of the ten, and have shot a couple others.  One cannot believe, however, that Einar forgot the Freedom Arms model 87 in 454 Casull.  That is a man's firearm, without doubt, and deserves at least an honorable mention.

Go thee thence and decide how many manly boom sticks you have in your safe.

Columnist Peter Roff over at U S News predicts how the press will cover Wednesday's initial debate between Mitt Romney and the worst president in American history, bar none.

A sample:

So confident was the president that he seemed to be floating a foot or so off the ground, Barack Obama was bright, engaging, and well-versed in every possible nuance of every question asked by the moderator, PBS's Jim Lehrer. His opponent, in contrast, was nattily attired in an expensive outfit appropriate to his status as part of the 1 percent of the nation's wealthiest individuals but, on substance, was sorely lacking in his understanding of the issues facing America.

Probably not too far from the actual truth.

It's like the days of the old Soviet Union.  While in New York to address the UN, Iranian president Ahmadinejad's personal cameraman has now defected, asking for asylum in the United States.

After having their semi offical news agency fooled by the Onion, and having Ahmadinejad's spokesman beaten up on the streets of New York by Iranian expats, this is the icing on the cake for a disastrous trip to the West by the Iranian tyrant.
