a late Cousin would go out in his forest and tie off the top of a young sapling of choice into the rough shape of a cane. On periodic visits the shape would be refined until it was judged it ready to cut. A little sanding and after cutting the length to suit, a cane was ready for a lifetime of service. He also crafted various kitchen utensils from whatever wood growing on his land that appealed to him.
