  1. I own a very nice cane that also has a very long and sharp blade hidden inside.

  4. a late Cousin would go out in his forest and tie off the top of a young sapling of choice into the rough shape of a cane. On periodic visits the shape would be refined until it was judged it ready to cut. A little sanding and after cutting the length to suit, a cane was ready for a lifetime of service.
He also crafted various kitchen utensils from whatever wood growing on his land that appealed to him. Born a hundred years too early, he built his 3-BR log cabin with basement from scratch along with a stone fireplace. Only drawback was windows were more 18th century style and meant to repel intruders than illumination.

  5. Worked with a fellow that had been career Canadian military with a good part of service in South-Asia. There, restrictions on off-duty carry had persuaded him to carry a discreet sword-cane. Old habits dying hard, after returning to North America, he continued carrying his trusted companion. After work one night he was observed by another colleague walking down Pennsylvania Avenue cheerfully swinging his cane as if on parade...sans scabbard. It had become detached a short distance behind. A legend was born as all ended well with the cane retired to the brolly rack.
