And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Me and my wife visited it in the early 2000s when we were in Boston. I could not believe how low the lower decks were. I am just under 5 ft 11 in and could not stand up fully on the lower decks.
Average height then was good bit shorter than now. Try visiting Spanish missions from the same era, and you'll realize 6' tall people were considered giants.
In July 1997, it was to sail under its own power for the first time since 1881. I was there to see it and the day before it sailed, I took a tour aboard the ship. Pretty awesome. But, as James noted above, there is not much original timber left on it. Still, an amazing ship. At least it can sail. The HMS Victory, Admiral Nelson's flagship, cannot.
The USS Constitution is still listed as an active warship on the US Navy's roster. The personnel aboard are all active duty sailors She is taken out once a year and rotated so the sun does not shine on one side all the time. They take VIP,s by invitation only, on this trip I visited there July 1976. That year the scheduled day's weather was so bad they did not take her out. The crew were very disappointed having worked so had for the bicentennial celebration The next day the weather was much better and a decision was made All the tourist standing on the dock (no VIPs) were allowed to board and they got to sail (towed) on her. My family's visit was 3 days late for this
When the USMC Vietnam Tankers Association held our 2021 reunion in Providence, Rhode Island, some of us drove up to Boston Harbor and took a tour of "Old Ironsides." I have to admit that I was totally impressed with the boat.
My daughter takes the ferry to and from work in Boston. She tries to sit on the side that faces the Constitution.

I grew up outside of Boston, visited as a kid.
ReplyDeleteExcepting some original timbers is basically a complete rebuild(to original specs.) of original, not surprising given it's age.
Was taking out when the sailing of the ships hit Boston decades back.
I used the same new rigging rope made for that boat as carry handles for a friends coffin we built.

ReplyDeleteThe only active US warship to have sunk another warship.
