And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
The top picture is five stories, the bottom picture is eight or nine stories. Neither of them reflects a 52' move. So neither of them is the building in question, or the "fact" is suspect.
Mom worked for Pac Bell for 42 years. Having a pretty good idea how many telephone wire pairs would be involved in a typical Bell telephone building in 1930, and the requirement to move them 52', which was probably not factored into their connection as originally installed, I think the whole thing is codswallop.
Hmmm. A quick web search (https://tinyurl.com/yc7kbssr) for "indiana bell building moved 1930" proves that swalloping your cod should probably be done in private.
I keep coming back to 'why'? It was stated that there was a need for more office space, but the building's footprint remained the same. Draw new plans for your extra office space - it would be cheaper, faster and easier. But then we would not have this particular post.
Before we were ruled by safetyism.
ReplyDeleteThe building in the top photo is not the building in the bottom animation. Top photo is five stories and not set up for moving in the same way.
ReplyDeleteCorrect. That's why I said "the bottom picture."
DeleteAs for the top picture, I'd really like to see the crane where all those cables are attached to !
ReplyDeleteAnd I get cranky bringing a load of alfalfa home for our livestock…
ReplyDeleteThe repositioned Indiana Bell building served another 33 years before being torn down.
ReplyDeleteVery impressive piece of work to say the least.

YMMV.
Very likely it was an admin building, not a central office office switching center. Even then, there’s a huge amount of utility work.
