And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

The Assyrian Mastiff, 6th Century BC. (The era of the neo-Assyrian Empire) This dog was often used as a livestock guardian against predators and they were bred by the Assyrians.
Even though you're pretty nifty with a shield from my experience if a dog wants to chew on you it's gonna happen. Not to mention while the dog is looking for an opening so is the Assyrian with the spear.
