And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Formation of US Air Force fighters in flight. From left to right: YP-43 Lancer, Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, Bell P-39 Aircobra, Lockheed P-38 Lightning. 1941
And that's Airacobra. Effective combat altitude was 8,000 to 14,000 feet. No supercharger made ops above that tough. That was rectified later in the war and shipped to Russia. We kept the Mustang and the P-38
Combat on the Eastern Front typically took place at lower altitudes with relatively denser air (vs high altitude on the Western Front) so the Airacobra worked great for the Russians.
There's one at a local airport and the fuselage is surprisingly narrow, not much wider than your shoulders.
Sorry, not US Air Force. US Army Air Forces. The Air Force didn't exist until 1947.

The P-43 has a Pratt & Whitney radial engine; the other three all use the Allison V-1710, which also powered early Mustangs.
ReplyDeleteVery cool shot.
