Downstream, the campers suddenly found the creek water tasted odd.

  1. On a hiking trip in the Smoky Mountains in the late 70's and one of the girls washed her hair, with strawberry scented shampoo, in the only spring. Water tasted like strawberries for days. Tellico Mountain Camp in Tennesee .

  2. Me and friends hiked often in the Red River Gorge area i n KY. Standard joke was 'no need to worry about giardia, it's the racoon that died upstream that will make you sick'.

  3. The rivers in Vietnam, back in 1968, had all kinds of villages along them. The people use the water for washing themselves and their cattle. They also use them to wash their clothes and to take dumps. The next village downstream did the same thing. By the time the river ended at the sea, the water was pretty gross. Oh! And by the way, the rivers also held dead bodies of the VC and NVA when they'd be shot to death and fall into the water.
