And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Back when my mom was a girl and lived in Tuolumne, her dad and brother would get a bear every year
i used to live in Cold Springs and also just outside Pinecrest (next to the Tuolumne river) and had bear encounters a number of times, once literally face to face in my driveway in Cold Springs.
Bear meat here in Wisco is something to be cherished. It is so good and the fat rendered makes the best pie crusts. Quick question though, I have a friend in NoCal and he said that the bears there were not desirable because they were all infested with worms. What say you? Northwoods Free Man
Years ago, there was a warning about trichinosis from CA. bear, what we had was strong tasting so we swiss steaked it with lots of tomatoes and onion. Mom wasn't a fan: when something dead for a week still tries to crawl out of the pan, she wanted no part of it.
I was working behind my house on Soulsbyville Road last summer and a very large bear walked within 20' of where I was standing. He ambled up the hill toward Monte Grande Heights taking his time. I've lived there for 60 years and that's the first one I've seen.
My uncle had a place in back of Jones Mill, I think on Blackberry Road?. Had to drive past the burner to get there. Pickup's lived between him and the main drag. Good times.

Don't know about that, but I have an colleague with a ranch in the pines above Red Bluff, and he claims the bear up there are more numerous than deer.
