And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Iron Thunder, Crow Eagle, Fool Thunder, Slow White Buffalo, All Holding Peace Pipes, Dakota, Circa 1880s
1. They didn’t and don’t smoke marijuana in their pipes… 2. They are Ceremonial/Spiritual pipes used for daily prayer and for ceremonies. 3. They are also used to acknowledge agreements and to swear paths to understandings under the pain of death if violated. 4. White men labeled then “peace pipes” because they were used by the tribes to verify and swear holy oaths to peace agreements.. 5. Custer smoked a pipe of peace with the Sioux and then “crossed” it by leading a war party against them thereby sealing his fate by Wanka Taka..
The comment at 9:45 AM is correct on all points. I have made many pipes from red pipestone for both male and female members to be used for ceremonies and personal use
