Nature: Red In Tooth and Claw

  1. The Colorado Fish and Game folks reintroduced (I think it was) four wolves to the wild. Almost immediately, the ranchers put up a stink that their calves would all be killed. It's been almost a year and there has been one report of one calf killed so far. In my rusty - dusty brain housing group, the weather kills more calves.

On another note, the deer population in the state is insane... Why? There are no natural predators to help control the deer. The wolves will help with car-deer crashes.

  3. In northern Wisconsin there is a lot of talk that the deer herd is suffering because of the wolves. I think it is bullshit, at least where I live you can’t throw a stone without hitting deer. And I know there are wolves here because I see their tracks in the snow in my drive and I hear them howling at night.

    1. When I lived in Pennsylvania, there was an annual report made by the insurance companies of the automobile - deer collisions. The number was around 46,000 per year. No wolves = Too many deer. And by the by, those deer are White Tails. They are prone to throw themselves in the path of a traveling car or truck.

  4. i have 3 housedogs that are friendly to others but are demons to the local wildlife. 2 black mouth currs and a border collie. i live deep in the woods may be one reason and they are very territorial. they have the ability to feed themselves if necessary. they do eat what they kill.
it's funny that they always come show it to me first, braggin rights? hey daddy, look what i caught in the garden. they are great dogs.

  5. While elk hunting in CO last year, finishing camp setup, two Kangal dogs showed up in camp and spent the night at our camp. Seems CO doesn't allow wolf hunting, but doesn't seem to have an issue if your dogs chase down the wolves and kill them! Seems a rancher picked them up to protect his herd. Nice pups, BIG pups!
