Heavy Loadout

  1. Not really that heavy.
See what a fully loaded F15, F14, Or F4 Phantom can carry. The F18 is small potatoes.

  2. Looks to be in anti-ship/land attack configuration with four AGM-84K SLAM-ER and two AMRAAMs and two Sidewinders for air defense.

  3. Why does it look like a cockpit on the bottom? What is that?

    1. I assume you are looking at the rectangular dark patches arranged in a U shape just ahead of the nose wheel doors? I think those are part of its EW system, along with the four rectangles on the bottom of the engines.

  4. I've heard that there's 'no slack in light attack'.

  5. Flying upside down/looping with that load is not going to be good on the wing structure.

    1. Au contraire. That's exactly how you want to load the wings, because he's not cruising inverted, he's rolling and/or pulling back on the stick, keeping all the Gs the airframe is pulling positive. When used as part of a ground- or surface-attack, it also lets the pilot see the target on a pop-up from low-level by looking through the top of the cockpit, before diving inverted, completing the roll-out, and dropping or launching ordnance.

No pun intended, but that's how they roll.

  6. It's amazing to me that it can find lift with that much air distraction under the wings.

  7. Just lost one close to Mt. Rainier yesterday, hadn't found the crew so far. They fly almost on my roof on their training flights. I saw the same plane fly over the home around 3 P.M. They lost contact around 3:20..Hopefully the crew makes it!
