And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Jody Scheckter right? Well him or his teammate, after this he went on to race Formula 1 with Gilles Villeneuve and Team Ferrari.
All good until Gilles died when his tire exploded and he flipped up and over the car in front of him. The fact the the top Ferrari man allegedly would not attend his funereal because he was not Italian, put a bitter taste in my mouth.
Villeneuve was killed after colliding with Jochen Mass at Zolder in 82. His seat separated from the car launching him into the catch fence. As for Enzo Ferrari's relationship with Gilles, here is what he said: "His death has deprived us of a great champion - one that I loved very much. My past is scarred with grief; parents, brother, son. My life is full of sad memories. I look back and see the faces of my loved ones, and among them I see him"
It is Depailler during a filming run at Monaco free practice 1 in 76. The second vid is Jackie Stewart filming a piece at Paul Ricard circuit in southern France for ABC sports. That was probably filmed before May 1976 since the massive airboxes were removed sometime in the spring that year.
It looks like a design intended to overcome catastrophic understeer.
ReplyDeleteI remember that thing, kinda.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, 50% more tires means 50% more drag.
Tyrrell P34, F1 racer in 1976
ReplyDeleteAs I recall, the lower profile front was supposed to be more aerodynamic but the weight penalty of two suspensions did it in.
ReplyDeleteThe theory was that the smaller tires would create a smaller aerodynamic cross section while providing the same contact area.

Pffft, my truck has that style of front end but just to distribute weight.
