And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Aspen Family Vacation: Markleeville, Hope Valley, Sorensens, and Caples Lake
You had a beautiful drive. Last week my wife and I were visiting your part of the US and took a drive from Red Bluff to Lake Almanor starting on Highway 36. From the lake we retraced to pick up Highway 32 to Chico. The Park Fire burn area was huge and the loss of property was amazing. Mile after mile of tree trunk sticks, foundations where the houses burned down, and burned out equipment.
In the privately and commercially owned areas, the logging of burned trees was in progress, but we didn't see any recovery effort in the Lassen National Forest. I'm happy you had better views.
What you witnessed happening in the Lassen N.F. was "Paralysis by Analysis". It's been going on for years. In '92 a 24,000 acre fire happened just east of Placerville, CA. Half the ground burned was El Dorado N.F., half belonged to Michigan California Lumber Co. (now SPI). By the time the El Dorado logged their first salvage log the following July, Mich-Cal had logged half their ground and had already replanted it.
The U.S. Forest Service is completely dysfunctional and has been for over 40 years.
Drove through there a month ago on our way north to Susanville (and back). Hope valley is always my favorite part. Sorensen's looks to have been sold. Can't recall he new name. Goetz in Pine Grove
It's the Desolation Hotel now. Prices are enormous, all the cars in the parking lot are Porsches and BMW's (one of which was a gorgeous green!). Can't afford the place anymore, but back in the day we'd take the kids up there this time of year and have a great time. This trip was a voyage down memory lane. The owners of Sorensen's are new, but the aspens there are still some of the best.
Hope Valley is a little slice of Heaven on Earth.
ReplyDeleteSure is.
DeleteWas there 41 years ago - beautiful country
ReplyDeleteBeen through Carson Pass a few times on the Harley. Caples lake, Sorenson's, and the surrounding area are magnificent.
ReplyDeleteThat is what Colorado looked like a week ago.
ReplyDeleteLove the pics, CW. You definitely have an eye for capturing great images.

Deleteaspens are pretty but when you live in the midwest the hardwoods and such spoil you w/ a lot of different colors.
