Hi-Lift Jack. A must for any serious off road work.

  1. Yes, you need the base.

You also need a WabFab if you don’t want it to slip.

    Better with an ARB X-Jack

  2. These things will kill you if you're not paying strict attention. Keep them well oiled and grit free.

  3. Even more than the base, a couple 2' long chunks of 2x10 or 2x12 pressure treated to give you extra footage in soft soil.

Plus some heavy duty purposely built wheel chocks. Rocks and chunks of logs just aren't safe enough.

Those farmer jacks aren't the safest things in the world, by the way. As anonymous 9:17 said, they will kill you. Killed lots of farmers over the years. Practice, know what you're doing, and prepare to run like heck when, not if, that sucker slips.

I got lots of practice using one in sugar sand in East Florida. With my dad's 1970 Olds 98. A truly amazing offroad vehicle, I could get that tank into and out of places you would not believe.

  4. Yep, when working one of those jacks you take it the full length of the handle travel both ways or it will hurt you.
